Our final video, "Our Tonle Sap Transformed: A Legacy of Change," tells the story of our collaborative journey to conserve this vital biodiversity and ecosystem at Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve and empower the communities who depend on it.
This project was led by WCS Cambodia, and we would like to thank all our invaluable partners RECOFTC-Cambodia, FORUMCIV Cambodia, Sansom Mlup Prey, NatureLife Cambodia Organization, SHE powered by IDE, Oxfam in Cambodia, and Cambodian Disabled People's Organisation (CDPO) and the European Union in Cambodia for their generous support in making this legacy possible.
Together, we can protect Our Tonle Sap. It's not too late.
Since 2015, Sansom Mlup Prey Organization (SMP) has been dedicated to improving the livelihoods of rice farmers in Cambodia's central floodplains. Now, with the support of the European Union in Cambodia through the Our Tonle Sap project, led by the WCS Cambodia, we're taking this commitment to new heights.
By implementing the Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP), the world's first standard for sustainable rice cultivation, we're empowering farmers to adopt environmental friendly practices that benefit both people and the environment. This means:
1. Improve farmer livelihood through implementing smart agriculture practices to increase yields and better access to the market
2. Protected Environment: reducing emissions and preserving biodiversity especially the critical endangered Bengal Florican
3. Women’s Economic Empowerment: to improve women’s position in household and community decision-making and improve their incomes from agricultural production.
In 2024, we have reached 4,851 farmers across Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, and Pursat provinces. Together, we're building a sustainable future for our farmers and our planet.
Ms. Horn Chhun, from Kampong Thom province, is a proud participant in community patrols and a champion for gender equality. Through GALS training with Oxfam, Horn has transformed her family dynamics, fostered understanding and reduced conflicts. She dreams of a brighter future: a thriving business, a hospital, and a school in her village.
Oxfam's Gender Action Learning System (#GALS) training empowers women to set their own priorities and achieve goals, promoting gender equality. It encourages collaborative learning, breaking traditional norms, and enhancing livelihoods. Oxfam's initiatives equip communities to tackle challenges and seize opportunities, leading to lasting change., Siem Reap, and Pursat provinces.

Women from all walks of life are fundamental in the effort to protect Our Tonle Sap. They are working with civil society, private companies, or being “normal” citizens living around the lake. The one thing they all have in common is their superpower that can bring about positive change to Our Tonle Sap.
So for this #InternationalWomensDay, Our Tonle Sap project team would like to express our sincere thanks to all these amazing women and all the work they do for Our Tonle Sap.
Please watch the video to learn more about how ordinary women have superpowers to help Our Tonle Sap through trainings with SHE Investments.
We would like to shine light on the hard work and sacrifice that our Ministry of Environment rangers and Community Protected Area committee members have made to protect Our Tonle Sap. They are heroes in our eyes.
The work of NGOs, rangers, and Community Protected Area committee members is imperative, but it will all be in vain if we do not give them the support that they need. As citizens, it is also our duty to help our national nature conservation heroes fight this battle. It is not too late.
Our Tonle Sap, our home, our duty.
Please watch the video below to learn more about the work of our national heroes, and how you can support them.
